The Sustainability Game

Hereby a message from the course coordinators of the course "The Sustainability Game":

We are looking for motivated 2nd and 3rd year students who have followed at least one sustainability-related course to join the period 3 elective GEO2-2425: The Sustainability Game!

In The Sustainability Game, UU bachelor's students specializing in sustainability topics collaborate with BSc Games & Interaction students from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht.

Games are an exciting tool for exploring interdisciplinary and complex sustainability problems. They can build directly on science to offer rigorous representations of human and natural systems and different societal roles and perspectives, while offering highly experiential, scalable modes of engagement. Games also allow experimentation with more sustainable futures. Because of this, games offer unique possibilities for societal relevance.

Interdisciplinary teams of ~5 students design serious games focusing on exploring sustainable futures for diverse external clients, with UU students taking on the role of sustainability experts. Last year clients included the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL), Stockholm Resilience Center, Eden Holland and De Herenboeren.

Sounds interesting? How about the skills and knowledge you’ll gain...

  • In-depth knowledge of game design, media concepts and methodologies
  • Using game design to learn about the representation of complex systems and future scenarios
  • Collaborating in interdisciplinary teams in a creative design process
  • Translating scientific knowledge of sustainability themes into appealing applied games for a wider audience with diverse societal clients
